Hurts so Good!

There’s something psychological about spending cash that hurts more than swiping a piece of plastic.

While researching today’s blog the above quote, taken from where can i buy furosemide 40 mg, struck me as really getting to the heart of the matter when it comes to the value of using cash vs. credit cards in pursuit of effective family budgeting.

I had spent hours online combing through can you buy furosemide over the counter, can you buy furosemide over the counter in uk, and furosemide for dogs buy regarding successful family budgeting. The vast majority made mention of the value of replacing debit and credit card spending with pure cash outlays, providing the usual suite of reasons why: it’s easier to keep track of; it is more resistant to impulse spending; once it is gone it’s gone; etc…. It all made me want to run out and grab some cash from an ATM right away! But none of them really explained why it is so much easier to #savecash when you spend only cash as well as that single sentence from Dave Ramsey.

Perhaps this is not true for the younger generation, but for those around my vintage – those old enough to remember using the original “furosemide for dogs buy uk” promoted by Canada Trust, or those old enough to remember Canada Trust as a stand-alone bank for that matter – there is definitely something psychological about spending cash that makes it hurt more than putting something on plastic.

Perhaps it is the tactile element, the fact that you need to physically count out money before you spend it. You can actually feel your hard earned dollars slipping out of your hand. And, unlike after when you’ve spent on credit or debit, you can actually feel the difference in your pocket/wallet/purse after making a substantial purchase. Nobody ever said “I’m a little light today” when asked for a payment card!

We’ve spoken about this before, and I definitely feel that actually holding your cash throughout the spending process – from when you withdraw money from an ATM to when you hand the bills to the shopkeeper – provides you with an emotional attachment that pieces of plastic imprinted with your name do not – although I have heard stories about the how to buy furosemide card.

Being an ATM placement provider, and working closely with cash on a daily basis, I like the romance of that reasoning, but I don’t think it captures the whole picture. Because when we look at the whole picture, it also includes the credit card bill/bank statement that arrives at the end of month. And for those addicted to buying with plastic, that’s when the pain is really felt.

Don’t let your hard earned money leave before you’ve had the chance to say goodbye. Make a withdrawal from your friendly neighbourhood ATM and say hello to your cash!

Cash Will Never Be Declined

Have you ever heard these words: “I’m afraid your card is declined. Can you pay with cash?” If you have, you will understand that feeling of embarrassment when a total stranger has just told you you’re out of luck.

This week, I have been carrying out research into this particular issue and I find the results rather interesting. The percentage of credit cards that are declined each year is an average of 17%. This is alarmingly high as most credit card companies claim their decline rate is just 5%. What is interesting here is that out of all of these cases, 37% of them were due to personal finance issues. Let’s divulge…

The majority of these cases affected young adults aged between 18 and 24. This was surprising as this demographic generally does not have a high-enough income to support a maxed out credit card. So how are they getting access to credit cards at such a young age – their parents, their older siblings or their overly ‘trusting’ bank? Now-a-days it couldn’t be easier to get a credit card. Temptation is everywhere with most banks competing to give the best rewards to customers.

So, when people hear those dreaded words from a shop assistant, a waiter or a Starbucks barista – whom do they blame? buy furosemide in uk that credit card companies are the first to get the blame. Not surprising really, everyone will point the finger first and foremost before they turn it on themselves. This got me thinking – if you are with a credit card company that you claim you trust, why blame them the moment there is an issue? What is even more baffling is that 37% of people will automatically use another credit card if the first card is declined.

Last week I shared a where to buy lasix furosemide by the ATM Industry Association on my lasix furosemide buy online page outlining the difference of credit cards versus cash in a social situation. It shows a couple on their first date in a cash-only restaurant which results in the woman having to foot the bill as the man only had his credit cards. This #CashIsQueen video perfectly depicts that embarrassing feeling similar to the one when your card gets declined.

There is a solution to this issue and it is very simple – use cash! Cash will not let you down. Cash will not leave you feeling embarrassed at the checkout. Cash will pay for the beautiful woman’s meal on your first date. Find the nearest ATM and fill your wallet with an item you trust – cash!

I must admit that, between last week’s blog showing how, and how quickly, Canadians spend their paycheques and Monday’s article about the perils of holiday overspending I’ve been feeling a little down about the battle facing Canadians trying to #savecash. So I thought this might be a good opportunity to share a good news story about how one Ontario family managed to do just that over the holidays. This family, who we’ll call the Jeffersons, took the following advice from Monday’s article to heart:

One of the best ways to avoid the worry and hardship that comes with holiday overspending is to set a clear limit on the amount of money you have available, and then methodically track spending. Setting a realistic budget, and living by it, will also go a long way toward eliminating the anxiety when the mail arrives about a month after the holidays.

The first thing the Jeffersons did was to sit down for a family meeting before the start of holiday shopping season. The Jeffersons are an average Canadian family of four, surviving on one income, while taking care of two small children. As is the case with most families with young kids, the Jeffersons had a habit of overspending at Christmas. Because they are on a tight budget, this overspending often manifested in credit cards bills that didn’t show their face until January, and occasionally in the form of an overdraft balance that made for a less than happy new year.

This past Christmas, however, the Jeffersons decided that things would be different. And that was the reason for the family meeting – to sit down together and come up with an effective strategy that would be easy to implement. And what was this strategy? Well, the Jeffersons decided the best way to #savecash over the holiday season was to use cash for all their Christmas-related purchases.

They settled on a budget – $2000 – which may seem like a lot, but is actually right in the range of what the average Canadian family spends over the holidays. We’re not just talking about Christmas presents here – we’re talking all spending related to the holidays. For the Jeffersons, this included presents for immediate and extended family, as well as a throwing a party for friends, attending a number of functions throughout the month of December – including multiple family Christmas dinners – and stocking up on food and drink for the holidays.

Not surprisingly, $2000 doesn’t go as far as you might think when it is being pulled in so many different directions. But, determined to #savecash and keep to that budget, the Jeffersons put the credit and debit cards away. They fleshed out their budget and created a schedule for visiting an ATM to take out instalments of their Christmas bounty. When they landed on an ATM day, they would pull out a debit card, head to the ATM to get funds, and make the required purchases.

How did it all turn out? I’ll let Mrs. Jefferson tell you:

“The most important outcome is that we were able to stay within our budget and avoid ugly credit card bills in January by using cash for all our holiday purchases. Equally important was the fact that nobody went without. We didn’t cut out purchases as much as take more care about what we were purchasing. Gone were gifts that nobody asked for and last-minute checkout impulse purchases. Instead we shopped carefully and frugally, always with cash in our pocket. And after it was all over, we even had enough left for family pizza night – where we shared stories of a great, and affordable, holiday season.”

And with that we end January on a high note – showing you that the post-holiday period offers potential for much more than regret and credit card blues, if you make a plan and stick to it. Take it from the Jeffersons, the best way to #savecash next holiday season is to use cash, exclusively.

The Canadian Paycheck: Here Today, Gone Tomorrow

furosemide 40 mg buy online I shared on Monday about two Calgary roommates saving $55,000 during a “Buy Nothing Year” really got me to thinking – and not just because saving more than 50 per cent of their combined take-home pay was an amazing feat. It definitely is amazing and all credit goes out to Geoffrey and Julie for their dedication in achieving that goal.

But what this article really got me thinking was, “what the hell do we spend on our paychecks on?”. Seriously folks, if you can cut out more than $50,000 in spending and still live a comfortable life, on what exactly are we spending our hard-earned dollars?

buy furosemide onlineturned up a few interesting facts on how the average American spends their money. While I’m sure Geoffrey and Julie could find lots of fat to cut, spending that, for me, could be truly called ‘discretionary’ came in somewhere around the 15 per cent mark. Maybe I’m just a bit of a softy, or perhaps Americans have a newfound love for frugality – what I found most startling was that the average American actually has a positive balance before taxes are figured in – making well over $60,000, but spending less than $50,000. This left me wondering exactly how America became the most indebted nation in the world.

But, let’s be honest, what I was really curious about, by this point, was how Canadians stacked up against our frugal neighbours. According to a fabulous infographic I’ll share with you on furosemide tablets 20mg to buy on Friday, not so well. Some of the depressing highlights (lowlights?) of this study were as follows:

  • The ‘miscellaneous’ budget alone of the average Canadian equals almost 15 per cent of their paycheck.
  • Maybe we try to hide some of our ‘leisure’ spending in there, as the average Canadian claims to spend less than $100 per paycheck in that area.
  • Both these items however pale in comparison to personal tax, which, for the average Canadian, is the single largest line item in their budget.

There were many more interesting facts to be mined, but considering The ATM Man’s campaign to #savecash, the following were the findings I considered the most interesting, and most disturbing:

  • The average Canadian accumulates $65.11 of debt with each paycheck. So every month, we are worse off than the month before – $1692.86 worse off per year, to be exact.
  • This is particularly true in Ontario, where we accumulate almost $165 in new debt with each paycheck. Doesn’t that make you look forward to payday?
  • Not surprisingly, StatsCan reports that the debt of the average Canadian increased by $2779 from 2012 to 2013.

This was during a period of historically low interest rates – which you might say has encouraged overspending. But these rates won’t last forever, and the question is whether we’ll be able to reign in our overspending once interest rates go up.

With this in mind, we’d all be well advised to follow Geoffrey’s and Julie’s example, even if a little less militantly, of figuring out exactly which spending is discretionary, how much can be cut out, and how to ensure you don’t overspend.

You know our position, the more you touch, feel, and get to know the cash you have, the less likely you will be to part with cash don’t. When was the last time you said ‘hello’ to your money, the last time you actually held some in your arms?

Why not go visit an ATM today and get reacquainted with your cash. You just might not be so quick to part, enabling you to actually #savecash in the end.

A Realistic Christmas Fantasy

Our theme this month at the ATM Man Blog is holiday overspending – why we do it, how we do it, and how it affects us. With credit card bills detailing our holiday spending starting to arrive in the mail, it is definitely a timely topic. And as where to buy furosemide demonstrates, credit card overspending is a serious issue that can have damaging effects on families, no matter what their income bracket.

In fact, when it comes to holiday overspending, it can be argued that the higher your income bracket, the higher your credit card limit, and ultimately the higher the pressure to overspend wildly on the holidays.

Now, while it is true that few of us feel the pressure to buy gifts from the furosemide 20 mg to buy such as a $475,000 ‘fragrance journey’ that includes first class tickets to Paris, five-star accommodations, white-glove car service and a bespoke scent developed by sixth-generation Master Perfumer Olivier Creed that is delivered in 24 14-karat gold-gilded six-litre flacons and 12 14-karat gold-accented leather atomizers – or even a $55,000 package from Leontine Linens Home Trousseau, which includes a home visit from founder Jason Scott Hodges where, together, you select bed, bath, and table linens for every room in your house – that fact remains the pressure to go bigger and better grows every year.

As that pressure increases, so does the pressure on your budget, even if, like the family detailed in Monday’s article, you make a comfortable six figures per year. And while we can’t underestimate the value of seeing the look of pure pleasure on your kid’s face as he unwraps that new 100th Anniversary Limited Edition Maserati Ghibll S Q4, valued at $95,000 (another great gift from the Neiman Marcus Catalogue and one Santa neglected to put under my tree this year) the best gift of all that you can give to your family is to remain solvent.

As we know, the best way to remain solvent is to only spend the money you have. But in order to keep your spending within these limits, you have to know how much money you have – unlike Monday’s family, who didn’t realize they were the proud owners of $100k+ in credit card debt until the last of their five credit cards was declined.

The easiest way to spend only the money you have is to use cash – and to always be aware of how much cash you have. And as we also know, the most effective way to use, and keep track of, your cash is to frequent your friendly neighbourhood ATM. Unlike your ‘friends’ at the credit card companies, an ATM won’t provide you with money you don’t have. Also unlike your credit card company, an ATM will always let you know how much cash you have left – immediately, not at the end of month when you have already spent way beyond your means and it is too late to do anything about it.

So if you want to save yourself and your family an abundance of financial headaches that can leave you digging out of a seemingly bottomless pit of debt for years on end, why not try putting the credits cards away next Christmas and spending only the money in your bank account, while tracking it in realtime. Doing so will #savecash and save you a lot of heartache

How to Really Be in the Black over the Holidays

I must admit that I allowed myself a little chuckle over the holidays while watching Interac’s pervasive where to buy furosemide in uk commercials – and not because I was amused by ‘Holiday Bill’. For those of you not familiar with this holiday advertising campaign, here are some details, in Interac’s own words…

We are dedicated to talking to Canadians about the value of using their own money, to pay or exchange money with family, friends, neighbours or merchants.  Our message is being delivered through our “Interac Be in the black” platform featuring insightful, straightforward and bold communication about why life is just better when you use your own money. Our desire is that through your payment choices, you will find yourselves on the positive side of debt – in the black versus in the red. By paying with the money you actually have, you can enjoy the things you bought rather than worry about paying them off. Your bank balance will be truly balanced – in real time, all the time.

Unfortunately, the only thing that is ‘black’ about this campaign is what the pot is calling the kettle.

Is there really a difference between using your credit cards or your debit card for point of purchase sales during the holiday season? Not if you have lots of money. If that’s the case, you can either spend it directly from your account, or spend it on credit cards and pay ‘Holiday Bill’ in full when he arrives.

But what if, like most Canadians, you don’t have lots of money just sitting around waiting to be spent. Well, in that case, you can either spend like a rock star and put it on your credit cards, or you can spend the little money you have in your account using your debit card.

Great stuff! That’s what Interac is talking about, right? Well yes and no, because there are two problems with this scenario. The first is that after paying with your debit card, you’re not provided with the remaining balance in your account. If you’re on a tight budget this makes Christmas shopping more like spinning the roulette wheel – or trying to count cards – because you never know when you will run out of money. Unless…

Unless you are one of the millions of Canadians with overdraft protection on your bank account. With overdraft, you can keep on spending, even if you are out of money. It’s kind of like a credit card, except the interest rates are even higher! If you do have overdraft protection, Interac offers you absolutely no protection from holiday overspending – actually, it encourages it and leaves you with an even heftier “Holiday Bill”.

There is only one true way to prevent using holiday overspending and that is to use cash. Stopping at an ATM while holiday shopping, you are able to choose exactly how much cash you are going to spend. In doing so you will always immediately know how much you have left in your pocket and, most importantly, you will also know how much is left in your account, thanks to your handy ATM receipt.

So if you really want to #beintheblack next holiday season, trying using cash. Because using cash is the easiest way to #savecash.
